🇬🇧 Topics we discussed this week in Herefordshire during Refugee Week

During Refugee Week this week, across different communities in the county, we explored some simple yet powerful questions:

• What does courage mean to you?
• Do you consider yourself a courageous person? Why or why not?
• What would you put in your backpack if you had to leave your country suddenly — possibly forever?
• And what would you have to leave behind?

These conversations are not theoretical. They are about lived experience, choices, loss, and the inner strength that helps people keep moving forward in difficult times.

We are at Hereford Market today, talking about one We are at Hereford Market today, talking about one simple but important question: What is courage?

Come and join us for a chat, share your thoughts, and be part of the conversation. We would love to hear your story and what courage means to you.

See you at the market!
Today in Kington, Herefordshire, we are talking ab Today in Kington, Herefordshire, we are talking about courage as we celebrate Refugee Week.

We were delighted to be joined by Ukrainian opera singer Oleg Synytsia. Together with his family, he found safety in the UK thanks to a British family who opened their home and hearts, becoming sponsors and offering refuge from war.

It makes us reflect on what courage really means.

Is it courage to welcome a family of strangers into your home, knowing they do not yet speak your language? Is it courage to trust people from a different country and culture? I believe it is.

Courage is not only found in extraordinary acts. Sometimes it is found in simple human decisions: to help, to support, and to stand alongside those facing difficult circumstances.

A special thank you to our local volunteers whose kindness, dedication and quiet determination make such a difference every day. Your support helps people rebuild their lives, feel welcome, and become part of the community.

It is through these acts of kindness and solidarity that strong communities are built and hope is restored.

A heartfelt thank you to the local community, volunteers, and activists who support people facing circumstances they never chose. Your kindness, compassion, and willingness to help bring hope and a sense of belonging to those forced to leave their homes.

Courage is not only about overcoming challenges—it is also about standing alongside others and offering support when it is needed most.

Our events across different parts of the county continue to show that the theme of courage during Refugee Week is much more than just a powerful word. It reflects the lived experience of millions of people around the world.

We invite visitors to reflect on a simple yet deeply challenging question:

What would you take with you if you had to leave your home — perhaps forever?

Your documents? Family photographs? Your child’s favourite toy? A treasured family heirloom?

This question encourages us to see refugee stories not as statistics, but as human journeys shaped by loss, hope, and courage.

What would be the most important thing for you? Share your answer in the comments.
