Following a very challenging year, Home-Start Herefordshire is calling on people with professional skills to step forward as a volunteer trustee to help guide and oversee its future work supporting local families with children 0-18. Home-Start Herefordshire has been running its service for 39 years and currently has 70 volunteers. The charity has trained volunteers with expert support, helping families with young children through their most challenging times. Home-Start Herefordshire is there for parents when they need us the most, because childhood can’t wait. No judgement, just compassionate, confidential help and expert support. Starting in the home, our approach is as individual as the people we’re helping.

Our most recent new trustees are Virginia Taylor and Philippa Granthier who both joined at the beginning of 2020.

Can you spare 8/10 hours per month to join our friendly team to help in the governance of Home-Start Herefordshire to ensure the charity is carrying out its purposes for public benefit.

Andy Walkden Chair of Trustees says: commented "We currently have 7 trustees on the board with a range of skills and experiences. We are now looking to welcome two new team players with a passion to help give support and to strengthen our Board. We value diversity in our workforce and warmly welcome applications from candidates from all backgrounds and sections of our local communities. People with knowledge or expertise in safeguarding, ideally with an up-to-date knowledge of family law, or IT and accountancy skills, would be a distinct advantage

Although the Trustees volunteers don't run the Scheme on a day-to-day basis – that’s the job of paid staff – but, as a board they are responsible for the vision and strategy of the scheme as well as overseeing finances, staff and property. All expenses are reimbursed. Whilst this is a serious commitment with legal and financial responsibilities, trustees have no personal financial liability as the Herefordshire scheme is a company limited by guarantee. “In return for volunteering for a few hours a month, you will be able to meet friendly volunteer Trustees, enhance your own skills, knowledge and self-confidence, whilst making a real difference to families with young children in Herefordshire.”

Philippa Granthier: “I’ve worked alongside Home-Start Herefordshire for several years now and have always been impressed at the positive changes they achieve working with families in need of help. When the opportunity came up to be able to volunteer as a Trustee I jumped at the chance to be able to be more directly involved. It’s been tough this last year with Covid, but the Board are an enthusiastic, committed group of people from all sorts of different backgrounds. It’s been a real pleasure and honour to get to know them, to have some fun and feel as though I am making a real contribution to Herefordshire families. If you fancy doing something worthwhile for 8-10 hours a month, I would thoroughly recommend joining us!”

Virginia Taylor: “I have had close links with Home-Start Herefordshire for the past 15 years, including as Chairman of their 25th Anniversary Appeal. Having always admired the vital work they do in helping young families in the local community, I recently rekindled my involvement by becoming a Trustee. It is a hugely rewarding and enjoyable experience to work with other committed and like-minded Trustees and to be able to actively contribute, in whatever way I can, to this very special local charity.”
