Herefordshire Young and Young Adult Carers supports children and young adults aged 8-25 who are looking after a family member with an illness, disability, mental health issue or addiction.
The past year has been a challenging time for everyone but particularly so for young carers who are already more likely to experience stress and anxiety due to their caring role. The pandemic and subsequent lockdowns meant our young carers being at home 24/7, unable to access their usual respite breaks, feeling worried about the vulnerable person they care for and feeling more isolated and anxious than ever. When we entered the first lockdown in March last year we immediately adapted how we work so we could continue to give the support they need.
We moved our Young Carer Clubs online and due to popular demand now run two a week. The clubs are a great opportunity for meeting new friends, playing games, sharing experiences and just having fun. Our young adult carers have requested help with everything from housing to employment, college and university issues, finance and relationships. They’ve needed to wrap up warm at times as this often involves socially distanced one to one support outdoors, in every kind of weather!
In uncertain times we do our best to provide constancy and continuity for our young and young adult carers. To find out more you can find us online:
